France
Malcolm S. sailed Tea Pot from Oare Creek to Ramsgate, signed on Pat B. as crew for the channel crossing to Calais, and from there on travelled singlehanded along the canals to St. Omer. He was delayed there whilst a problem with the lock gates was sorted out, then proceeded down the Canal du Nord to Rheims and onto Chalons-en-Champagne, stopping where he fancied on the way.
Holland
Outlaw sailed to Dover, joined Celeste, and both left for Holland via Dunkirk and Blankenberg. They visited Flushing, Middelburg, Veere, Goes, Zierikzee and the island De-Omloop.
Outlaw left from there to return to Folkestone via Blankenberg and Dunkrk.
Celeste continued her cruise, visiting Kortgene (twice), Goes, Middelburg and Flushing. She returned home via Blankenberg and Dunkirk.
North France and Channel Islands
Mallard sailed to Brighton, made a 19 hour trip to Cherbourg, then to Guernsey where she joined 40 other boats of the Westerly Owners Association for their summer cruise. They visited Jersey, St. Caste, St. Quay, Paimpol, Alderney, Cherbourg, Le Havre, Fecamp and Dieppe. They then made their way east to St. Valerie-sur-Somme.
Meanwhile, Outlaw, Vagabond, Orion, Sundance and Compromise had left Folkestone for Boulogne, where they were held up for a day by the promise of high winds. However, whilst there they were royally entertained to a BBQ and tour of Le Touquet by our friends from Etaples. They then went to St. Valerie-sur-Somme and a rendezvous with Mallard.
They all sailed to Boulogne and met Nice Lady and Blossom, and some Etaples boats. Outlaw, Vagabond, Orion, Sundance and Compromise returned home safely, in fog, on the Saturday. Mallard, Nice Lady and Blossom returned the next day.
Ramsgate
Jubilee and Temeraire had four days in Ramsgate, the main aim of which was to sample the annual Folk Festival at nearby Broadstairs. A walk over the cliffs took them to the Festival, which proved to be most enjoyable, with many pubs and open air locations hosting a wide variety of styles. The atmosphere was happy and friendly, and can be recommended to everyone, even if folk music isn't altogether your cup of tea.
They even managed to do a bit of sailing on the short journey to Ramgate and back home!
East Coast
Gamester left Folkestone, had a night in Ramsgate, then sailed along the North Kent coast and up the Medway to Chatham. Bad weather caused a delay to the masterplan, but meant an unexpected but pleasant visit to Hoo marina and a warm welcome from Hoo Ness Yacht Club. Then it was back down the Medway and across the Thames estuary to Burnham on Crouch. North Fambridge Yacht Station was next, then Brightlingsea. In the Blackwater, Bradwell, West Mersea, and Tollesbury were visited, followed by Walton on the Naze and Titchmarsh marina. The captain and crew thoroughly enjoyed all their visits, but eventually had to leave for home. It was back to Ramsgate, a night in Dover and a safe return to Folkestone, completing a successful and enjoyable fortnight.
